Disclaimer:

We believe:

○       The economic and regulatory conditions in the United States have pressured American corporations to find creative ways to improve their profitability

○       Having a choice, the American companies that offshore jobs would prefer to employ American workers instead of exporting jobs to foreign countries. After all, if Americans are unemployed, who would purchase their goods and services in this country?

○       The American government should adopt policies that would reward companies that demonstrably hire Americans instead of sending their jobs overseas

Background:

Hundreds of U.S. corporations are employing hundreds of thousands of people in other countries.  They do this either directly or, as it’s most commonly done, through a company based in the foreign country.  Companies “offshore” their jobs for a variety of different reasons, among which is the most obvious, to save money by paying lower wages.  However, the ramifications are both obvious and not-so-obvious.

The most obvious result of offshoring jobs is higher unemployment rates in the U.S. at the same time that the workers in other countries enjoy unlimited employment opportunities and unprecedented incomes.

Among the less obvious and negative aspects of offshoring are dissatisfied internal and external customers of the U.S. corporations.  Customers become frustrated by lack of subject matter knowledge, poor English skills and unfamiliarity with the American standards of Customer Relations demonstrated by the offshore workers.

On the other hand, most employees of companies that offshore, complain about wasted time and effort and poor quality of work in dealing with their off-shore counterparts.  Many offshore companies suffer from very high rates of turnover and are forced to hastily hire, often fresh-out-of-college applicants, in order to fill the positions dictated by the contracts with the U.S. companies.  As a results, the American counterparts end up having to work longer and harder in order to pick up the slack created by this lack of knowledge.  No sooner the offshore employee gains the valuable experience, does he/she flee to another company for a higher paying job, and the frustrated American employee is forced to repeat the process.  This cycle sometimes doubles or triples the time it takes to complete a project and often times not with the quality expected by the management.

Another aspect is security.  Offshore workers are not as cognizant of security issues or as diligent about protecting the companies that they work for as their American counterparts. Companies risk their confidential trade secrets as well as their customers’ identities from being compromised. This is even more important now that our financial, banking, legal and medical claims data are handled by offshore workers.

What can be done:

We believe in these economic conditions with high unemployment rates, American workers and consumers must take action to ensure no American jobs are exported and those that have already left our country are brought back.

We can start by contacting our representatives in the House and the Senate and to let them know that we want action on this critical issue.  Our prosperity and our children’s future depend on it.
